Experience the traditional craft of Maki-e

On November 5, 21 representatives from each country competing in the Miss International World Competition visited the MOA Museum of Art and experienced the techniques of Maki-e, a traditional Japanese lacquer craft.

The competition is not just a competition for physical beauty but also aims to promote world peace by increasing mutual understanding between countries through international exchange, friendship and goodwill, and social contribution activities. Ahead of the 62nd conference, which was held in Tokyo on November 12, representatives from approximately 70 countries and regions were split into several groups and visited various parts of Japan to learn about traditional culture and arts.

Representatives from France, the Netherlands, Romania, Malaysia, Brazil, Hong Kong and other countries visited the MOA Museum of Art. The participants entered the museum smiling as tourists pointed their cameras at them. After learning about the history of lacquerware and maki-e from lacquer artist Kazumi Murosein the studio, they experienced the technique of sprinkling gold powder using special tools.

Representatives from each country commented, “The art pieces made from the natural material lacquer were very interesting, and this experience deepened my understanding of traditional Japanese crafts,” and “The view of Atami from the museum was beautiful. I would like to share my maki-e experience with many people.”

After the experience, the contestants viewed the art pieces in the museum where the exhibition “Kôrin’s National Treasure ‘Red and White Plum Blossoms Screen’ x Important Cultural Property ‘Wind Gods and Thunder Gods Screen’” was being held, and then set off to their next destination with smiles on their faces.
